A consumer goods executive asked me if I had ever had success helping someone unemployed in an industry under the threat of tariffs get a job.

I smiled because I have several times, and one of my favorite clients made a seemingly impossible leap.

I was fortunate enough to meet a hungry mid-level leader who was recently reduced.  She wanted to move away from smaller companies and pursue her dream of having a VP title at a monster company in her space.  

On paper, frankly, it wasn't there.  She couldn't make the case with her resume.  But, she did some stuff that I loved, actions that I had only seen at more progressive companies.

It took six weeks, but she did it.  She thawed an executive hiring freeze (fueled by new tariffs) and won two offers from major companies in her space, achieving the title and responsibility she wanted with a total comp bump of more than 300k.

Kristin's story may be seen as a reverse of ageism.  She was competing against talent 15-20 plus years her senior, and it was hard for some to believe what she had accomplished.  She landed interviews, but nothing happened.

We built a Candidate Operating System that was aggressive, an unusual data-driven toolbelt in her category of job.  Once she had her product set, we validated it with executives at Nike and Urban Outfitters.

Then, we built a presence for her online and offline that got influencers, connectors, and decision-makers talking about her at target employers.  We leveraged a boutique investment bank in her space, a partner at EY, and multiple executives at each target company.  Once the decision-makers heard her name attached to her C.OP.S., they wanted her to prescribe solutions for their growth issues.

In the end, she was able to push away offers and accepted the ultimate job of her young career.  People chase her now.​

Running with the bulls

January is typically not one of the better job search success months of the year. The reason for that is that companies start running. With uncertainty, there's a little bit of hesitation, but most companies will start running. And that means that you need to run at pace. You need to run with the bulls. Getting information about companies is not difficult. Companies put out news all the time, with rare exceptions. Many companies detailed this info in Q4 of last year, what they're trying to do this year, 2025, Q1, 2, 3, etcetera. You have the ability to take that information and craft messaging around value that you believe is unique and educate them. You are a ruthless educator. You're not a beggar for jobs. Begging for jobs doesn't work. You educate so that people chase you and create jobs for you and you alone. This happens right now. 
Number 1: take the resume, take the energy off of it. It's not gonna lead to big success.
Number 2: don't worry about your LinkedIn profile.
Number 3: focus on what this value is.
​Number 4: focus on companies that are doing things right now that you can help with. Again, finding news about companies is not difficult. 

It's typically on their website. 5, you need to meet them where they eat. Running with these bulls is about figuring out where leaders are and offering that value to educate them there. You can do this online. You can do this offline. 
There are a million different strategies. You just have to think about yourself as You Inc., and you'll start finding these strategies, testing, and winning. You wanna catch a job in January? You can't sit and click. Put away those resumes, put away the LinkedIn profile, and focus on education; how you're gonna educate these leaders with value is hard to deny.
